Description

Abstract
"Marine biogeochemical cycling and function of ecosystem in the East China Sea are under the forcing of environmental change, including global and local anthropogenic activity (e.g. full operation of the Three Gorges Dam). In view of this, we propose to continue the collaborative research of Long-term Observation and Research of the East China Sea (LORECS) to study the effects of fluvial and atmospheric fluxes on marine biogeochemical cycling and ecosystem in the East China Sea. There are 17 researchers from 5 different institutions in the integrated proposal. The main project of LORECS are responsible for the logistics and measurements of hydrographic (PAR and salinity) and nutrients (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and silicate) parameters. The following issues will be addressed. 1. Effects of marine biogeochemical cycling, ecosystem function and fishery resources by the changes of river discharge and material fluxes. 2. Assessment of the effects of marine biogeochemical cycling, ecosystem function and fishery resources after full operation of Three Gorges Dam. 3. Responses of marine biogeochemical cycling and microscopic organism in the surface ocean of the East China Sea by atmospheric forcing and material fluxes. 4. Develop a transportation and deposition model of atmospheric materials. 5. Develop a numerical coupling model for the carbon and nutrient cycling. 6. Application of molecular genome to study the impacts of environmental changes on marine phytoplankton. 7. Application of DNA Barcoding to identify fish species and track trophic interactions in marine food web. 8. Set up the core labs in studying the marine biogeochemistry and molecular ecology. 9. Establish a long-term data collection system on the atmosphere, marine environmental chemistry and biological as well as ecology information in the East China Sea. 10. Provide an education platform for undergraduate and graduate students to study the integrated marine biogeochemistry and ecosystem research."
