Description

Abstract
The bamboo shark (Chiloscyllium plagiosum) plays an important role in the marine ecosystem in northern Taiwan waters. However, its ecological aspects as well as its population status are poor known. Thus, this study is to examine its feeding ecology, growth, movement, and to evaluate its stock assessment. Specimens for feeding ecology and growth studies will be collected at Fugi fish market on a monthly basis. The results of growth derived from tagging study will be compared with those using vertebral band reading. The length frequency data will be continuously collected during the study period and these data will be converted to catch at age. The catch at age data coupled with CPUE estimated from sampling vessels will be used to conduct the stock assessment of the whitespotted bamboo shark using ADAPT-VPA. Tagging study will be conducted on board using conventional tags and chemical tag (OTC). The tag-recapture data can be used to validate the growth parameters and the periodicity of band pairs formation, as well as to estimate the mortality rate and abundance of whitespotted bamboo shark. The acoustic tag will also be used in tagging study to examine the movement and habitat utilization of whitespotted bamboo shark. Finally, the parameters estimated in this study will be used as the inputs of Ecopath with Ecosim to constitute the marine ecosystem. Furthermore, the Ecosim will be used to simulate the impacts of various fishing pressure and resource management strategies on the ecosystem. Finally, the recommendations and suggestions of management for bamboo shark will be proposed.
