Description

Abstract
Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica is an important cultured species in Taiwan. Mature spawners could not be obtained from wild population. The natural resource of eel larvae is even decreasing in recent years. Therefore, artificial induced maturation and fertilization, and larval rearing become important for eel culture. Several problems are still deserved to be studied such as the control of maturation in male and female eel, the quality of sperm and mature oocyte, the control of natural spawning and fertilization rate, the rearing of eel larvae, and larval nutrition. Also, it would accelerate the progress of artificial spawning and larval rearing if more information about the reproductive endocrine system in Japanese eel is provided. Therefore, the long-term objectives are to develop the routine techniques on the artificial induced maturation, spawning and larval rearing. The hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis is also investigated. The objectives this year are to induce maturation and spawning, and also study the reproductive hormones in cultured Japanese eels. The effects of various hormones on the regulation of gonadotropin receptors will be conducted. The induction of maturation and spawning is also included. The research data will provide valuable information on the reproductive endocrine system in eels and promote eel aquaculture.
