"自工業革命以來，持續排放至大氣中的二氧化碳造成了全球的暖化，也導致了海洋的酸化。然而，相對於無脊椎動物，海洋酸化對魚類的影響則所知甚少。申請人之前的研究顯示，嚴重的酸化水體(pH 7.4-7.6)會抑制點帶石斑 (Epinephelm coioides)的代謝與生長内分泌系統，造成生長的延遲與骨鈣含量的下降。此外，酸化的環境對魚類生理的影響可能還包括生殖等諸多面向。許多外在環境因子，例如光週期、溫度、鹽度以及酸鹼度等，可能經由内分泌系統的調控影響動物性成熟的時刻。過分延遲或者族群内部不一致的性成熟時間，可能導致生物錯失最有利的生殖季節，進而影響族群的存續。然而，目前國際上尚無海洋酸化對魚類生殖與相關内分泌系統的影響的相關研究。而未來海洋的酸化對性分化與性成熟的影響將足以造成海洋生態與養殖產業的衝擊。因此，本計晝擬就此一課題，挑選台灣重要的養殖魚種一烏魚(Mugil cephalus)來進行此一研究。研究内容將探討何種酸化的程度足以影響烏魚的早期性別比例與初次性成熟；同時，本計晝中將從緊迫反應、能量代謝以及神經傳導物質探討酸化環境影響魚類生殖内分泌系統的可能機制。本計劃不但是海洋酸化對魚類生理影響的重要基礎研究，同時也有助於永續漁業與族群保育。此項資訊也有利於政府制訂定未來的環境政策。 " Since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, continual emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere has resulted in both a steady increase of global temperature, and increasing acidity of the world’s oceans. The acidified seawater has been known that influences invertebrates dramatically. However, impacts of ocean acidified seawater on fish were less known. In earlier studies, we demonstrated that highly acidified water (pH 7.4-7.6) regulated the metabolism and endocrine system of orange spotted groupers (Epinephelus coioides), which led retarded growth rates and less bone calcium content. Furthermore, the effects of acidified environment on fish physiology may occur in other aspects, i.e. reproduction. There are many external factors, e.g. photoperiod, temperature, pH, etc., that may influence the endocrine system and disrupt the timing of sexual maturation. The animals with discordant maturation rhythm could miss the best reproductive season and, in consequence, reduced population viability. However, the impacts of ocean acidification on fish reproduction has never been studied, despite the possible effects may damage the marine ecosystem and aquaculture industry. Using strip mullet (Mugil cephalus), which is an important aquaculture species in the world, as a model animal, we aimed to investigate how predicted acidification of the ocean environment may affect the early sex ratio and puberty (first sex maturation) of mullet, and whether the acidified seawater can regulate the reproductive endocrine system. Moreover, the possible roles of stress responses, energy metabolism and neurotransmitter plays in this pathway will be inspected in this study. This project proposed an important research regarding to the effects of ocean acidification on fish physiology. As well as, the findings are not only benefit to the sustainable fishery and population conservation, but also provide irreplaceable information for future environmental regulation.
