Description

Abstract
"Global economic losses due to typhoons account for more than half of all natural disasters worldwide. Countries in the West Pacific Region are particularly susceptible to such losses due to the frequency of typhoons in the region. These losses manifest in terms of crop losses, damaged infrastructure, and threats to human safety. Past studies of typhoons and El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) have focused primarily on short-cycle phenomena over the past 100 years. However, historical changes in climate and their impact have been the subject of our recent study. Based on sediment cores of lakes in Yilan, Taiwan, these studies revealed an obvious increase in annual typhoon activity over the past ten thousand years since the Holocene. We discovered that the frequency of typhoon increased since 2000 years ago. Furthermore, comparisons with Chinese historical documents in Southern China and Taiwan’s lake record support a synchronous period in typhoon activity. To further investigate likely occurrence times and routes of Northwest Pacific typhoons over the past 2000 years, this project proposes an international lake core start-up program, working in concert with Chinese and Japanese academics to drill lake cores in south-eastern coastal provinces of China and Japan. If smooth going, we hope the program can be expanded to regions such as the Philippines or Vietnam. Finally, the core samples will be sent to Taiwan for dating, particle size, mineral composition, chemical composition, magnetic susceptibility, diatom and pollen analyses. We can estimate the rainfall intensity, frequency and route variations of typhoon by using chemical, physical and biological indicators in sediments. Moreover, if we also can find the aeolian index in this cooperation project, we can discuss how the extremely climate event impact the ecosystem in the future."
