Description

Abstract
The atmospheric deposition of both macronutrients and micronutrients plays an important role in driving primary productivity. The new nutrients imported by atmospheric deposition may be an important environmental factor to control phytoplankton growth on the surface seawater. The impact of nutrient-enriched atmospheric inputs is enhanced under oligotrophic conditions. Phosphorus (P) is a ubiquitous element found in amino acids, in proteins and as an integral part of organisms, together with nitrogen (N). Human-driven imbalanced atmospheric deposition of N and P might have induced or will induce P limitation to the ecosystems. In contrast to the atmospheric reactive N pool, the atmospheric soluble P pool is less studied and remains highly uncertain. In this study, We discuss sources of the main nutrient species (N and P) in the aerosols and their stoichiometry. The atmospheric supply rates of these nutrients and the potential impact of the atmospheric deposition on the sub-tropical western Pacific will be estimated. The objectives of this research include characterization of (1) transportation mechanisms of soluble N and P in the study area, (2) identification sources of air mass by using sea-salt ions/non-sea-salt ions and NOAA air mass backtrajectories, (3) sources of atmospheric N and P by using correlation analysis, and (4) impact of atmospheric soluble N and P inputs on marine environment in this region.
