Description

Abstract
"The integrated program “Long-term Observation and Research of the East China Sea – IV” aims to understand the influences of both the natural and anthropogenic perturbations on the biogeochemical cycles and ecological system of the East China Sea (ECS), with emphasis on the effect of the construction of the Three-Gorges Dam. As part of the LORECS-IV program, this sub-proposal would focus on the shift of carbon chemistry in the ECS shelf waters in response to global changes. The objectives of this study would include: (1) to elucidate the mechanism resulting in the paradox of “the heterotrophic waters of the ECS shelf can act as a significant CO2 sink”; (2) to examine whether the CO2 stored in the subsurface waters, which is derived from the remineralization of photosynthetically fixed POC in the surface waters, can return to the surface and diffuse back to the atmosphere during the severe weather events in summer (e.g. typhoon) and the prevailing period of northeast monsoon in early autumn; (3) to study whether the nutrients are preferentially recycled with respect to carbon in the ECS and its implication on CO2 sequestration; and (4) to study the shift of carbon chemistry of seawater after the completion of the Three-Gorges Dam, and its potential impact on the capacity of CO2 uptake."
