Description

Abstract
I. Potential analysis of climatic change impact on the fishing condition of tuna longline fisheries in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans In this sub-project, we try to analyze the fishing condition and stock abundance of tuna and billfish in Pacific and Atlantic oceans in their relations to climatic variability. Ecological and environment coupled models will be established in order to evaluate possible impact from climatic and environment variability and to promote sustainable utilization of tuna resources. We aim to reach following items: 1. the establishment of fishing ground database in Pacific and Atlantic Oceans; 2. the fluctuation of fishing and stock condition for tuna and billfish in relation to the oceanic environmental variability in Pacific and Atlantic Oceans; 3. the present and future problem and solution of tuna fisheries and management under climate change. II. Effects of climate change on the marine environment and tuna fishery in the Indian Ocean Climatic oscillations, anomalies, and changes clearly affect population dynamics and many ecological processes in marine ecosystems. Variations in population abundances and distributions of pelagic tuna species are consistently associated with large-scale marine environmental variations and climate indices. Environmental factors may influence fish habitats and fishing grounds, and therefore will have positive or negative effects on catch rates. The purposes of this study were to investigate whether the climatic and marine environmental variations affect catches and distributions of tuna and billfish in the Indian Ocean. We modeled the effect of SST warming in a site-selection model i.e., scenarios given in the fourth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2007). The longline fishery data were used to evaluate transient relationships of the marine environmental change with catch rates and distributions of the fishing grounds and were also used to predict potential tuna and billfish habitats.
