Description

Abstract
The ocean-based carbon dioxide removal technology (CDR, also known as negative emissions) is one of the most cost-effective and nature-based solutions to achieve “net zero emissions” goal set by Paris Agreement. This project (Integrated Blue Carbon Research in the Northwest Pacific Ocean) aims to depict the carbon cycles in a three-dimensional fashion in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, by linking three subprojects: (I) carbon and energy flow in euphotic zone; (II) carbon fluxes in the water column; and (III) coastal blue carbon. Subproject (I) will conduct a set of dilution feeding experiments to quantify energy flow, and will use high-throughput sequencing technology to determine the species composition and diversity of organism in euphotic zone. Subproject (II) will investigate biological pump (i.e. particulate organic carbon flux) and its controlling mechanism, and will characterize sources of sinking particles in water column. Subproject (III) will measure the organic and carbonate metabolisms, greenhouse gas emission fluxes and lateral carbon transport fluxes in seagrass meadows and coastal wetlands around Taiwan. Subproject (I) and (II) may link the carbon cycle on a vertical dimension, while subproject (I)+(II) and (III) may link the carbon cycle on a horizontal dimension. Additionally, Subproject (I) and (II) will conduct joint cruises in different hydrographic regimes (e.g., upwelling, mesoscale eddy, and internal wave) to examine how the energy flows, air-sea carbon flux and biological pump may respond to different physical processes. The integration of the above three subprojects thus can improve our understanding on the oceanic carbon cycles in a three dimensional fashion, which is unprecedented. The outcomes of this project is expected to fill the knowledge gap for developing ocean-based CDR, which could complement CO2 emission reductions and contribute to net-zero CO2 emission targets.
