Description

Abstract
The northern South China Sea (SCS) and the subtropical western North Pacific, the research areas in this proposal, are the most oligotrophic regions with active eddies near Taiwan. The eddy roles in changing marine environments are significant by adjusting the local distribution of sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface wind in these regions on weather timescales. It is crucial for the issues of ocean ecosystem and climate variability to further understand the general response of marine-biological activity and lower atmosphere to the eddy-induced variability of marine environments on different timescales. The 3-dimentional (3D) variability of ocean temperature/density and chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentration corresponding to the eddies will be mainly focused in the research areas. Within a 3-year period, this project sequentially plans to comprehend (1) the eddy impact on the chl-a distribution, (2) the general 3D structure of eddies, (3) the 3D, short-term effects of eddies on the marine environmental variability and (4) the long-term eddy roles in the marine-biological and climate changes. Developing a more complete understanding of the eddy roles in the upper-ocean and lower-atmosphere environments for the issues of ocean ecosystem and climate variability requires detailed analysis of satellite observations together with subsurface in-situ observations and numerical simulations. 南中國海的北部海域和西北太平洋的亞熱帶海域是台灣鄰近的貧營養鹽區域。這些海域富有海洋渦 漩,所以研究渦漩對海洋生物環境的影響,將有助於探討海洋物理和海洋生物的耦合科學議題。在天 氣尺度上,這些海域的渦漩已被證實能顯著地調整區域性的海表面溫度和海表面風場,成為探討海洋 生態系統與氣候系統之變化的重要關鍵。因此,必須進一步了解,在不同的時間尺度上,因渦漩所產 生的環境變化所造成的海洋生態和低層大氣的反應。本計畫將主要透過分析渦漩所導致的海洋溫度、 密度和葉綠素甲濃度的三度空間變化,進一步探討以下所提出的科學議題。在這三年計畫中,這些科 學議題將依序漸進的探討: (1)渦漩對葉綠素甲濃度分布的影響程度、(2)渦漩的三度空間結構、(3) 渦漩三度空間結構對海洋環境變化的短期或瞬時效應 以及 (4)渦漩在海洋生態變化和氣候變化中的 長期作用。為了解決海洋生態變化和氣候變化的科學議題,本計畫的執行目標是結合並仔細的分析來 自不同研究方法(現場觀測、衛星遙測和數值模擬)的數據,全面性的了解渦漩在上層海洋和低層大氣 環境中所扮演的各種重要角色。
