Description

Abstract
The East China Sea is well known as one of the high productive aquatic system in Taiwan. According to the possible effects of Kuroshio and Coastal waters of Mainland, these changes of physical, chemical and fishery oceanography could have profound impacts on the marine phenomena that are important to biology, ecology and dynamic carbon transformation in this sea. Generally, larval fish may be served as the key point of marine dynamics or grazing food chain. Studying and monitoring on the interaction of environmental factors and the concentration of larval fish and species composition may provide data for the predicted ability of fishery oceanography and carbon dynamic. In 1994 GLOBEC suggested acoustic techniques were used to evaluate the size and aggregation structure of plankton, while the remotely sensed data conducted from the satellite and acoustic system, have expanded widely on the relationship of abundance and environmental variables over the last decade. The major purpose of this project are established in an investigative work based on biological and acoustic surveys aiming at the assessment of abundance, community structure and horizontal and vertical distribution of larval fish in the continental shelf, NE Taiwan. In addition, a pilot study was conducted by MTD net from surface to 250 m depth in the I-lan bay on 30-31 July 2007. A total of 591 larval fishes was collected and assigned to at least 13 families and 57 taxa. The dominant species was Benthosama pterotum(40.95%), Myctophidae Diaphus B(12.18%), Callionymidae(8.46%) and Gobiidae(6.60%), respectively. Thus, we were tried to use the MTD and ORI net for investigating the characteristics and species composition associated with the environment in the continental shelf off the I-Lan bay and upwelling area in the first year. For the further understanding the diurnal vertical distribution and net fishing efficiency of ichthyoplankton in this water, micro-multilayer depth sampler with acoustic analysis were also considered in next two year.
