Relationships between high school students' learning interest, learning motivation, and ocean literacy: a longitudinal study

標題: Relationships between high school students' learning interest, learning motivation, and ocean literacy: a longitudinal study
作者: Tsai, Liang-Ting; Chang, Cheng-Chieh
摘要: This study investigated the trends and correlations between ocean literacy (OL), marine science learning interest (MSLI), and marine science learning motivation (MSLM) in Taiwanese high school students in a three-wave longitudinal survey, with an OL scale used to assess students' MSLI and MSLM. A total of 428 valid responses were collected. The results indicated that the students' OL decreased by the second survey but slightly increased by the third. The MSLM scores exhibited an upward trend, whereas MSLI remained unchanged. A cross-lagged analysis revealed a consistently positive correlation between OL and MSLM across all three waves. Moreover, significant positive correlations between OL and MSLI and between earlier OL levels and later MSLI were observed, indicating OL plays a critical role in fostering MSLI. This study elucidates the associations between OL and MSLI and proposes directions for enhancing future OL education and research.

Positive Attitudes Toward Mathematics and Big-Fish-Little-Pond Effects Among Eighth Grade Taiwanese Students

標題: Positive Attitudes Toward Mathematics and Big-Fish-Little-Pond Effects Among Eighth Grade Taiwanese Students
作者: Yang, Chih-Chien; Tsai, Liang-Ting
摘要: This study was to examine the big-fish-little-pond effects (BFLPE) on mathematics achievement by the students' positive attitude toward mathematics (PATM) of Taiwanese eighth-grade students in the Trends of International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). The SLM (students like learning mathematics), SVM (students value mathematics), and SCM (students confident in mathematics) have been three critical factors of students' PATM. The sample comprised 5,042 Taiwanese eighth-grade students from 150 schools that participated in the TIMSS. The two-level hierarchical linear model analysis extends the BFLP positive association between students' individual mathematics achievement with SCM to include SLM and SVM levels. In addition, the BFLPE negative correlations between school-average mathematics achievements and aggregated self-concepts have also been confirmed with these three variables. The interaction study indicated that students with high achievements experienced a greater BFLPE on SLM and SCM scores than did students with low achievements. Implications of the findings and suggestions for future study are discussed.

The Concept of Ocean Sustainability in High School: Measuring the Ocean Literacy of Vocational High School Students in Indonesia

標題: The Concept of Ocean Sustainability in High School: Measuring the Ocean Literacy of Vocational High School Students in Indonesia
作者: Chang, Cheng-Chieh; Tsai, Liang-Ting; Meliana, Dwi
摘要: In this study, we used propositional concept maps with different ocean-related conceptual sentences to assess the ocean literacy of maritime vocational high school students in Grades 10-12 in Indonesia. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic country, and many aspects of people's lives, including their jobs, are related to the ocean. Therefore, it is crucial to assess the ocean literacy and related knowledge of students, especially maritime vocational high school students. Thus, in this study, an open-ended questionnaire was employed to acquire data from 255 students at the National Vocational High School 1 Temon in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A total of 215 males and 40 females participated in this study. In addition to descriptive analysis, we used a one-way analysis of variance and a t-test for statistical inference. The results showed that 11th and 12th graders scored significantly higher in ocean literacy than 10th graders, and female students significantly outperformed male students. Furthermore, student learning was teacher-centered. In this paper, we summarize the results and provide suggestions and references concerning ocean literacy for teachers and high school students.
