Title: | Aquaculture: personal experiences and visions. In: C.S. Lee (ed.) | Authors: | 廖一久 | Issue Date: | 2003 | Publisher: | Aquaculture – Retrospective and Outlook: An Aquaculture Summit | Abstract: | Introduction: This paper presents my personal experiences, from childhood to my training in aquaculture research as a student, to my important research breakthroughs after my educational training, to my aquaculture activities after retirement. One good thing after retirement is that one can look back and reflect on what accomplishments have been achieved during one's career, and to share these experiences with others, hoping that it will serve as an inspiration for pursuing a research career in aquaculture. After 35 years of conducting aquaculture research in government service, it was indeed a great experience to look back on what I have accomplished so far, and to look forward to what I can still do for the advancement of aquaculture. In this chapter, I also share my visions for the aquaculture industry, and offer some useful advice for established researchers as well as promising young researchers in aquaculture. This chapter is divided into five major topics: (a) my education and training to becoming an aquaculture scientist, including my first exposure to aquaculture; (b) my research career in aquaculture, highlighting the research breakthroughs that I have made, in addition to other research and extension activities, and administrative and academic work, which has included conference organization and editorial work; (c) my visions for aquaculture; (d) my advice to the younger generation on the essentials of being a successful aquaculture scientist; and (e) my post-retirement career. |
