Abstract: This study developed a method for designing parallel two-degree-of-freedom proportional-integral-derivative controllers for unstable time-delay processes with unknown dynamic equations. First, a performance index accounting for both transient response performance and disturbance rejection was developed. To obtain useful data even if the output of the system exceeds the allowable range, an effective penalty function was included in the performance index. The N-M simplex method was used to iteratively determine the optimal controller parameters. The proposed approach has the following advantages: (1) it can be used regardless of the stability of the open-loop system; (2) the mathematical model and parameters of the process need not be known in advance; (3) it can be used for processes that include measurement noise; (4) it has good transient response performance and is also robust against external disturbances; and (5) it enables more efficient controller design and reduces costs.

Abstract: This paper presents an efficient method for designing optimal controllers. First, we established a performance index according to the system characteristics. In order to ensure that this performance index is applicable even when the state/output of the system is not within the allowable range, we added a penalty function. When we use a certain controller, if the state/output of the system remains within the allowable range within the preset time interval, the penalty function value is zero. Conversely, if the system state/output is not within the allowable range before the preset termination time, the experiment/simulation is terminated immediately, and the penalty function value is proportional to the time difference between the preset termination time and the time at which the experiment was terminated. Then, we used the Nelder-Mead simplex method to search for the optimal controller parameters. The proposed method has the following advantages: (1) the dynamic equation of the system need not be known; (2) the method can be used regardless of the stability of the open-loop system; (3) this method can be used in nonlinear systems; (4) this method can be used in systems with measurement noise; and (5) the method can improve design efficiency.

Abstract: Sliding mode controllers have wide practical applications due to their simple structure and robustness to disturbance. Although various sliding mode controllers have been proposed, most relevant studies have only investigated the conditions required to stabilize the system. For example, system stability can be guaranteed if the parameters in the control law satisfy specific inequalities or boundary conditions. However, the control power of a real system has a saturation limit, which increases the complexity of the system. Moreover, even if a stable controller is identified, the response performance of the system may not achieve the expected results. Therefore, the determination of the optimal parameters is a key step in designing a sliding mode controller. This paper proposes an error-integral-type sliding mode controller whose main characteristic is that irrespective of the system order, it only needs to determine three key parameters. We used the Nelder-Mead simplex method to assist designers in searching for optimal controller parameters more efficiently, even when the real system has the limitation of input saturation and the disturbance bound is unknown. Finally, we performed numerical simulations on a magnetic levitation system to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract: Parameter identification algorithms are very fundamental techniques in system engineering practices. For example, estimating the parameters of the AutoRegresive model with an eXternal input or AutoRegresive Moving-Average model with an eXternal input by using the least squares (LS) method has become a standard approach. However, the estimated parameters may generate extremely erroneous results when the signal is disturbed by large noise, which cannot be effectively filtered. If a frequency response method that scatters the power of a broadband noise over different frequencies is adopted, the effect of noise on the estimated parameters would be relatively reduced. Moreover, estimating whether the plant is a high-order system or is perturbed by a large noise is difficult. The estimated accuracy decreases even after applying the generalized LS method or other modified approaches. To overcome this problem, this study proposed a new technique combining a simplex algorithm and frequency response method for improving the accuracy of the parameter estimation of a dynamic system with a large noise (i.e., an extremely low signal-to-noise ratio) of the system. The algorithm is simple and easy to implement. Moreover, the precision of parameter identification can be increased even when estimated systems suffer from large measurement noises.
