Description

Abstract
Form the viewpoint of Western educational theories, the notion of the self is normally considered in terms of the concept of self-construction, self-regulation or self-efficacy. Regarding its educational purpose, it aims to achieve personal higher cognitive function, or to develop learners’ capabilities of adapting social environment, for becoming a well-socialized person. However, Eastern philosophy holds diverse view concerning self-cultivation. This is the starting point of this research. Drawing form traditional Buddhist philosophy, specifically to Zen philosophy, the researcher attempts to consider another possibility of self-education based on the notion of self-deconstruction. In Buddhist ontology, the constitution of the self is so-called no-self. There is no essence of the self. The Zen Buddhist self-education is therefore the practice of eliminating ego and selfishness, in order to discovering infinite potentialities in human nature. This research is a philosophical inquiry. Through the idea from Zen classics and its secondary literature, first, the concept of Zen self-education will be manifested. Second, current discourses of self-education in educational theories will be analyzed. Third, an Eastern self-education approach will be developed in terms of the thinking of Zen education. By this way, the consideration of self-cultivation or self-development will be discussed."
