We set out in this project to investigate the benefit and cost of labor safety and health regulation in Taiwan. However, since there is no objective value of preventing injury/illness or death caused by occupational accidents, the assessment of benefit of this regulation is a major challenge in our project. In view of this fact, here we estimate the hedonic wage model and utilize several industrial gender-specific risk indexes to assess the gender-specific statistical value of injury/illness and life, respectively. Furthermore, “the previous frequency of labor safety and health inspections per worker in each industry” and “the policy change in labor safety and health regulation in 2013” are also used as instruments to deal with the endogeneity between wages and occupational risks. Ideally, our results are expected to have important implications for the implementation and enforcement of labor safety and health regulation.
