Description

Abstract
"Our research interests began by observing following phenomenon: challenges of managing agri-food products flows and frequent reported implementation challenges of supply chain integration. Logistics planning in agri-food products is different from other products due to their special characteristics, such as requirements for air-conditioned transportation and storage. Supply chain management involves four mechanisms, decision making, information sharing, use of information technology and profit sharing. However, literature has found some implementation challenges, such as lack of central decision-maker, limited information sharing, and unfair profit sharing. To deal with these problems, an increasing number of studies have suggested using of power in the supply chain. Although growing numbers of researchers have considered the positive potential of using powers on supply chain integration, very little attention has been given specifically to power differences in integrating upstream supplier and downstream customers. Therefore, we aim to analyse how power drives logistics integrations in agri-food supply chains and to analyse how power- driven logistics integration influences logistics performance. This research will be based on fish and flower auctions in Taiwan and the Netherlands. We have following reasons for this research setup. First, fish and flower is the largest export item for Taiwan and the Netherlands respectively. Second, fish and flower are highly perishable in nature, thus making logistics planning more difficult. Third, Dutch flower auction is the world’s largest flower auction and is famous for its logistics excellence. We hope Taiwanese fish can learn from Dutch flower experiences. To achieve our research purpose, we formulate three research questions. What power variables can be identified when integrating upstream and downstream agri-food supply chains? what is the impact of power-driven logistics integration on logistics performance (cost, service and freshness)?, and to what extent do power variables differ between Taiwan and the Netherlands, and between flower and fish auctions? The overall research project is composed of a literature review, a case study, and a comprehensive survey. First of all, after reviewing the literature we decide using power theory and supply chain integration theory. For second activity, six cases will be studied, including a logistics company, a fish auction and a flower auction in both countries. The third activity is a comprehensive survey. Questionnaires will be sent to upstream suppliers, and downstream customers of fish and flower auctions in both countries. Data will be collected by mailed questionnaires and analyzed by the structural equation modeling. Finally, our research might have two possible contributions. For theories, we could suggest different power sources on upstream and downstream integration, and for policy makers, we will suggest future development of Taiwanese fish sectors and flower sectors. Up to now, we have finished interviews with logistics companies in Taiwan and the Netherlands. Our preliminary findings suggest expert power is related with information sharing, while reward, referent and coercive power are related with profit sharing. These findings will help to build our research frameworks and further tests in future."
