"鯙科魚類是海洋生態系的重要成員, 也是近海經濟性的魚類.在台灣經常可在魚市場、活海鮮店看到它們的蹤跡, 另外在海水觀賞魚店或大型海洋生物展示館中也經常出現, 頗能吸引民眾的注意.台灣周邊海域原本擁有豐富多樣且寶貴的鯙科魚類資源, 但近年來由於全球環境變遷, 沿岸珊瑚、岩礁棲地生態系受到破壞, 和人類過度的開採捕撈, 使得鯙科魚類的族群和數量急遽減少, 捕獲的體型也不斷變小, 許多罕見的種類甚至早已達到瀕臨絕跡的境地.此對於珊瑚礁區魚類多樣性的保育及漁業資源的永續利用極為不利.因此, 有必要對鯙科魚類作更深一層的調查和研究.本計畫擬調查現今台灣周邊海域所捕獲鯙科魚類的種別和數量, 釐清台灣本土海域現存鯙科魚類的種群分布狀況.藉由測量、記錄所採得鯙類樣品體長、體重、生殖發育等資料, 來評估其現存族群的狀況.整理瀕臨絕種的鯙類, 並建議將其列入亟需保育野生動物名錄中.採集、飼育鯙類活體, 以釐清其生態習性; 並進行鯙類繁、養殖的初步試驗.本計畫將有助於保存多種受到生存危機威脅的鯙類, 管理沿岸珊瑚、岩礁海域的漁業資源, 及保護自然海洋的生態系統." "Within coral-reef habitats, moray eels form an important part of the predatory ichthyofauna and they play a significant role in the dynamics of numerous prey species.They are also popular as food fish in fish-markets, seafood restaurants, or pet fishes of some aquaria in Taiwan.We had abundant muraenid resources from the waters around Taiwan.But many serious problems that include global change, pollution, physical alteration of habitat and overfishing have caused the violent degradation of their population, mean body size and led to the extinction of numerous rare species.Therefore, to do the conservation of marine ecosystem, to maintain these resources stably and to investigate the moray eels are essential works in Taiwan today.Our project plan to investigate muraenid fauna, abundance of survival species and geographical distributions of moray eels in Taiwan.Estimate their population dynamic from the data of measuring the body length, body weight and reproductive development.Review the endangered species of moray eels in Taiwan and suggest to list these species to CITES.We try to collect and breed living morays in order to study their ecological habit and do the preliminary experiments of artificial propagation.This project will contribute to the conservation of threatened muraenid eels, management of fishery resource and preservation of natural ecosystem."
