Description

Abstract
Sailfish (Istiophorusplatypterus、, caught in the commercial longline and recreational fisheries, is an important apex predator in marine ecosystems. However, basic information is insufficient for effective management of sailfish resources. For example, knowledge of the number of independent stocks and their boundaries is lack for sailfish in the Atlantic Ocean. Furthermore, there is little research on the habitat-related information and characteristics for sailfish stocks in the Atlantic Ocean. It is therefore necessary to examine the effects of marine environmental factors on the sailfish distribution based on their spatio-temporal patterns. Oceanographic variations and characteristics may also influence the range of fishing ground and the resource at different spatial and temporal scales of the variable, including sea surface temperature, mixing layer depth, net primary production, and bathymetry. Fishery data of the Taiwanese tuna longline fleet in the Atlantic Ocean will be collected in this study, and used to examine the impact on catch rates and the habitat of sailfish, through the generalized additive modes. The catch ratio and landings of sailfish will be estimated and used to standardize the abundance index of this stock to show the temporal variation. The results from these analyses could also investigate the temporal trend of the relative abundance index and possible seasonal migration patterns for sailfish. The management of time-area restriction on fishing relies on the information derived from the model of spatio-temporal distribution of sailfish could be used to potentially decrease the bycatch in tuna longline and purse seine fisheries and reduce the impacts on fisheries due to the management for this species.
