Description

Abstract
Recognizing the importance of helping students overcome difficulties during the pursuit of their degree programs, universities started implementing English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses at graduate level. However, many of the courses were designed without a systematic needs analysis. In addition, little research attempts to review what current EAP courses have offered to graduate students. This study takes the first step by investigating faculty perceptions on the needs of Taiwanese graduate students in relation to EAP literacy, and specifically to investigate their views on current EAP literacy courses, including the effectiveness and challenges of the courses. A questionnaire survey will be sent to faculties to understand their perceptions on students’ needs and current EAP courses. Then, a group of professors, including EAP course instructors, student advisers, and department heads, will be invited for a follow-up interview to explore their questionnaire responses in depth. Moreover, this study will compare the perceptions of faculties and those of students (findings from the previous project) for a more comprehensive analysis. The results of this study can shed light on Taiwanese graduate students’ EAP literacy needs, and offer insights into curriculum design and development. It is hoped that such a comprehensive survey on the needs of Taiwanese graduate students and the review of current EAP literacy courses can point to future directions for EAP curriculum renovation and EAP research on non-native English speaking graduate students."
