Description

Abstract
The number of internationally mobile students has been largely increasing due to the effect of globalization. In addition to native English-speaking countries, more and more students choose to study in non-English speaking countries such as Taiwan. Especially with the encouragement of the Taiwan government’s “New Southward Policy,” it is anticipated that the number of southeast and east Asian students studying degreed programs in Taiwan, whose first language is neither English nor Chinese, will be sharply growing. However, relatively little research has attempted to understand international students’ study experiences in these non-English speaking host countries despite abundant literature on those of their counterparts in native English speaking countries. The purpose of this study is thus to investigate international graduate students’ study experiences in Taiwan, especially their difficulties and ways of deal with these difficulties. In light of the situated learning theory and grounded theory, this study will interview a group of international graduate students, and then choose four focal participants for in-depth analysis. By understanding what factors may foster/hinder international graduate students’ participation in their respective discourse communities, this study will provide important pedagogical implications for universities that have recruited and those that plan to recruit international graduate students in non-English speaking host countries."
