Description

Abstract
The purpose of the digital archive project is to store important cultural pieces in digital formats. Currently, data are mainly stored in relational databases and in XML format. Therefore, it is extremely important to provide a good mechanism to manage data in different format in a consistent way. We plan to take three years to study the related topics. During the first year, we have studied the differenences between their representational capabilities, which are recorded in a mapping dictionary. This information allows us to successfully transform the corresponding query language, SQL and Xquery to each other. The project proposed in this year, is to extend what we are doing now, and focus on the real problem which the archiving institue is facing. The main research topics are as follows: (1) Schema Migration: when the definition of the XML metadata is changed, we wish to create the corresponding relational schema in an effective way. (2) Data Consistency: we wish to make sure that the data in different format are in a consistent status. (3) Advanced XML Query Processing: we will propose a more efficient query processing plan for the complex XML data. The relevant techniques include schema mapping, query translation, query processing and query optimization, etc. We plan to carry out this project for two more years. We also believe that the research result of this project could help the archiving institute manage the important information in a more efficient way.
