Description

Abstract
The scalloped hammerhead shark, Sphyrna lewini, is an apex predator that plays an important role in the marine ecosystem. This species has been listed on CITES Appendix II and IUCN has updated its stock status to “critically endangered, CR” in recent assessment. The scalloped hammerhead shark is one of the major shark catch in Taiwanese fishery, and its reproductive biology and age and growth have been studied decades ago, and its feeding ecology has been conducted recently. However, the stock identification and spatial-temporal distribution of this species in the western North Pacific are still unknown. In addition, the periodicity of band pair deposition of vertebral centrum is still uncertain. The stock assessment and management of this species were hindered by these research gaps. Therefore, this study aims to (1) identify the stock structure of scalloped hammerhead in the western North Pacific based on the samples from Taiwan and Japan using micro satellite locus analysis, (2) re-estimate the age and growth parameters, and validated by using bomb radio carbon technique, the fishing impact on growth parameters will be examined, (3) examine the spatio-temporal distribution and habitat preference for scalloped hammerhead in different life stages by using element analysis of vertebral centrum and fisheries catch data. The results derived from this study can update the life history parameters and provide solid and sound management recommendations to ensure the sustainability of the scalloped hammerhead stock in this region.
