Description

Abstract
The Kuroshio is a western boundary current in the North Pacific. It transports water and heat from low latitudes to high latitudes and affects the weather and climate of the Northern Hemisphere. To further understand variations of axis and width of the Kuroshio is very important, especially in the region adjacent to Taiwan. The ocean east of Taiwan is a rich zone of meso-scale eddy and is also a frequently visiting area of Typhoons. When eddies interact with the Kuroshio or typhoons pass over the Kuroshio, it would affect the path, transport and velocity, even characteristics of temperature and salinity of the Kuroshio. In this study, variations of Kuroshio axis and width east of Taiwan caused by eddy and typhoon will be investigated using satellite remotely-sensed data and in-situ measurements. The effects on Kuroshio surface properties by typhoons and heavy rainfall and the local atmospheric variations caused by the change of sea surface temperature will be also studies.
