Description

Abstract
Kuroshio is a western boundary current in the North Pacific. It is a strong, fast, and relative steady current. There could be an island wake even though a vortex street occurred in the lee of the island when Kuroshio passes by Green Island. This might be caused by the instability of the flow when it passes by the island. Because of the vertical mixing process, waters with colder, saltier, and higher chlorophyll concentration are observed on the sea surface of the wake area. This kind of vertical mixing is still not clearly understood. Therefore, more than 20-year satellite remote sensing data including high and middle spatial-resolution optical and radar images, as well as in-situ data including ship and glider measurements will be used to more understand the vertical mixing of the wake and its relationship to the surface pattern variations. The aims of this proposal are to investigate and to try answering the following issues within 2 years. They are 1) the sea surface temperature drop, extent, and type of the Green Island wake; 2) the influences of the island wake forced by winds; 3) the change of chlorophyll concentration of the island wake; 4) the vertical structure of the island wake; and 5) the relationship between the mixing intensity and the surface pattern distribution of the island wake."
