Description

Abstract
Taiwan has various water resources for the development of dynamic recreations including the culture of ornamental fishes as pets. In general, consumers suffer from the lack of control measures towards the frequently occurred diseases. Diseases outbreaks are also considered as the major burden of cost in the aquarium, importation or breeding. Diseases outbreak is commonly recognized being dependent on the existence of pathogen, susceptible host and deteriorate environment. The majority of gross signs of diseased animals may be easily observed. However, a precise diagnosis of the disease is prior to the treatment by using drugs or chemical and is generally complicate. Some pathogens such as virus and bacteria are invisible, and must be identified confirmed by experts. After identification, the disease may be controlled by an appropriate drug treatment. In Taiwan, research activities on the disease control for ornamental fishes are quite a few resulting in the lack of related literatures. Therefore, this project intends to investigate the health status of fishes farmed in commercial aquaria of imports, retailers and fish spwaners. Pathogens will be isolated from diseased samples, signs or lesions and gross will also be recorded. Effective control measures for identified parasites and isolated bacteria will be tested and recommended.
