本計畫採用國際珊瑚礁總體檢(Reef Check)的標準調查法,對台灣海域的珊瑚礁進行定量調查,以瞭解台灣珊瑚礁的現況,做為研擬海洋保護區和保育對策的依據.預定完成臺灣東北角、宜蘭、東海岸、澎湖、小琉球、恆春半島、蘭嶼、綠島等八個區域,每區域至少3個地點,每地點二個深度(水深三米、十米)的珊瑚礁現況調查.本計畫之目的為: (1) 建立台灣珊瑚礁現況之數量化資料, (2) 鑑定各區域造成珊瑚礁破壞之主要因素, (3) 建議珊瑚礁保育方法, (4) 建立台灣珊瑚資源名錄. This study applies a modified Reef Check protocol to survey the coral reefs in Taiwan. Eight regions including Northeast coast, I-Lan, Eastern coast, the Kenting National Park, Hsiao-liuchiu, Penghu, Lutao, and Lanyu will be surveyed. In each region, at least three reef sites and each at two depths (3 and 10 m) will be surveyed. Coverage of corals and other benthic organisms as well as the abundance of indicator species will be recorded. The purposes of this study are (1) to obtain quantitative data on the status of coral reefs in Taiwan, (2) to identify the major factors that are responsible for reef degradation, (3) to propose a practical measure for reef conservation, and (4) to establish the data of coral resources.
