Description

Abstract
The study aims to investigate the areas near shallow water hydrothermal vents at Turtle Island, off the northeast coast of Taiwan (west Pacific) in the period from August 2014 to July 2016, with field sampling, laboratory research and analysis held at same time. The theme of the present study focuses on the effects of high temperature and low pH water of hydrothermal vents (HV) on: (A) Physiological adaptation mechanism of shallow HV crabs (Xenograpsus testudinatus), focusing on how the water cauterizes of high-temperature and low pH affect physiological adaptations of the crabs, as well as how olfaction and vision influences foraging behavior of crab under HV environmet. (B) The ecotoxicological tolerance of zooplankton and copepods, and HV water influence on mortality and physiological responses. Also, (C) we continue the past study of Turtle Island zooplankton research themes, collect zooplankton samples in the surrounding waters of Turtle Island, and establish long-term ecological database in order to find out the impact and connection of global issues on regions in Turtle Island with global warming and ocean acidification for future study. Through a systematic investigation of present study, we will be able to improve understanding the adaptation mechanism, physiological responses, and ecological structure change of crabs (X. testudinatus) and zooplankton in HV area of Turtle Island. The research results would contribute the knowledge and understanding in ecology, behavior, adaptation, physiology and idiobiology of the biota in HV area.
