Description

Abstract
Long-term zooplankton and vent animals' ecology, life table, behavior, pollution, adaptation and reproductive biology - will be studied near shallow water hydrothermal vents at Turtle Island, off the northeast coast of Taiwan (west Pacific), in order to investigate how physical transport processes and the ecotoxicological tolerance and particularly behavior of plankton may interact. We will characterize vertical and horizontal distributions and temporal variation of plankton and larvae of vent species. Vertical distribution patterns at heights of 1, 5, 10m above the seafloor and the surface distributions were positioned directly above and at 10s to 100s of meters away from vent communities will be studied. The impact of vent plumes on coral distribution will be studies. The micro-structure of coral skeleton will be examined by SEM under various pH condition. Sampling will be conducted at different spatial and temporal scales from August 2012 to July 2015. Larval abundances will be compared both on-vents and away from them. Horizontal abundance patterns will be studied since hydrodynamic processes may have transporting impacts on the populations and assemblages of copepods. However, the species-level differences in temporal patterns indicate that there is substantial discontinuity in the abundance of individual species at vent communities, possibly due to the timing of spawning and/or behavioral interactions with flow. This analysis will provide evidence of a potential bottle-neck situation for plankton above vent sites that will also influence larval dispersal from, and supply to, vent populations. The intended study will improve our understanding of long-term zooplankton and vent animals' ecology, life table, behavior, pollution, adaptation and reproductive biology.
