Description

Abstract
"In the first year of this project, Ocean-Bottom Seismometer (OBS) data across the central Taiwan Strait off SE Kinmen collected in June 2017 will be analyzed to image the P-wave velocity structures of the crust. Based on the preliminary results of the project in 2016, several P-wave velocity anomaly zones observed at both sides of Cenozoic depression zone in the Taiwan Strait can be interpreted as faults between the graben and the horst owing to the flexural bending in the foreland basin. Furthermore, faults may extend to deeper structure based on the large lateral variation of the P-wave velocity in the Littoral Fault Zone which might have been resulted in 1604 Quanzhou Earthquake. Thus, between the Quanzhou and the Penghu in June 2018, OBSs will be deployed and recovered by Ocean Researcher II east of the central line in the Taiwan Strait and will receive signals from an air-gun array with a total volume of 12,000 in3 provided by the R/V YanPing II of Fujian. An OBS experiment in the second year of this project will be continuously implemented north of the Penghu Basin and crustal thickness in the central Taiwan Strait will be integrated by analyzing OBS data collected in the first year of this project. In the third year of this project, OBS data collected in the northern Taiwan Strait will be analyzed. Based on integration of OBS data in this project during the next three years and the TAIGER project in 2009, the locations of faults, the Moho depth and the P-wave velocity variation in crustal layers will be determined in the Taiwan Strait. Therefore, we can interpret seismogenic structures in the Taiwan Strait and provide information for building and operation of the nuclear power plants and the high-speed rails along the coasts of Taiwan and Fujian."
