Description

Abstract
(IMAGES-Paleoclimate of the Western Pacific and East Asia),並以本區域 的海洋沉積物岩心、湖泊岩心、洞穴沉積物古氣候記錄為重點,建立區域海陸氣 候變化自末次冰期以來的連續記錄,發展高精確度的年代模式,對比海陸氣候反 應幅度與時序的差異;並侧重目前較缺乏的西太平洋暖池的印尼海海域,與亞熱 帶-熱帶大陸與東南亞的古氣候記錄的搜尋與研究。 "IMAGES (International Marine Past Global Change Study) project aims to study the history of ocean and climate variability over the past 300,000 years. Under the framework of the international objectives and research interests, Taiwan IMAGES projects (1996-2006) have actively participated international IMAGES activities and successfully retrieved giant piston sediment cores mainly from the South China Sea, East China Sea, Papua margins, and southeastern Philippine Seas, and have developed active research programs of paleoceanographic core analyses. In the new phase of the IMAGES service project (2007-2010) our science objectives will be expanded into “IMAGES-Paleoclimate of the Western Pacific and East Asia”, focusing on reconstruction and comparison of paleoclimatic records of marine and lake sediments, and cave sediments since the last glacial stage. The scientific objectives are to develop continuous, high-resolution records for identifying different climatic responses and phasing relationships between oceans and lands since the glacial stage. The new IMAGES projects will organize a marine core survey cruise to the Indonesian seas in year 2007-2008 for retrieving high-sedimentation rate cores from the western margins of the Western Pacific Warm Pool, and conduct lake drilling in Mainland China, and establish a paleoclimatic data bank of East Asian lake and cave sediment cores for marine and terrestrial comparison. In the service project, funding is requested to analyze foraminifer oxygen isotopes and AMS 14C of carbon samples. The chronostratigraphies are supplemented by high-resolution analyses of paleomagnetic intensity, U-series radiogenic isotope, and age-correlation with polar ice cores and cave deposit records from nearby regions for establishing high-resolution age models for marine, lake, and cave sediment cores. These data will be used to document and identify any synchronous / asynchronous timing relationship between the climate variations in the western Pacific warm pool and in East Asian monsoon regions. The service project will provide better coordination for all IMAGES project investigators in conducting core analyses and research, with aiming at better quantifying past terrestrial fluvial or eolian sediment fluxes, stable oxygen and carbon isotopes of foraminifers, planktic foraminifer and diatom assemblages, sea-surface salinity estimates based on marine microfossils or trace metals, sediment flux, productivity, and nutrient changes estimated by microfossils or radiogenic U-series. The service project will also continue on strengthening and improving establishing permanent equipments and infrastructures that are necessary for paleoceanographic and paleoclimatological research in Taiwan; strengthening education and training for Ph.D. students' programs; and continuing participating future marine core cruise activities, site survey and cruise planning. The service project will continue promoting high-quality IMAGES-related SCI publications in international journals; and provide a platform for planning of coordination, exchange of information, consultation, data base management, core sampling services, attending international workshops and meetings, publications in national and international journals for all project investigators."
