Description

Abstract
"Paleo Sun-Moon Lake is a natural lake. It was an artificial reservoir constructed for preserving water since Japan governance, and also has the effects of electric power and tourism today. The Sun-Moon Lake has extremely contribution in waterdisequilibrium Taiwan. The reservoir construction and preservation of water resources are important issues for environmental estimation in the future. In this project we not only discuss the influences of climate change and human activities since 3000 yr BP in this area, but also evaluate the influences of environmental pollution and carbon storage in Sun-Moon Lake before and after reservoir construction. This purpose corresponds to the present research trends on climate changes and carbon storages. Paleoclimate research of Taiwan's lakes has proved that Holocene Optimum is the main period of summer monsoon strengthening. The summer monsoon declined since 4 ky BP, while the climate became wet and warm again in recent 2000 yr. However, the 2 ky research is not so clear during the Mediaeval Warm Period and Little Ice Age in Taiwan. The chief reason is that the core data lack the enough resolutions and dating method can't be solved before. For this reason, we want to get high resolution cores in the Sun-Moon Lake, and select two or three sites. Each core has 2m~3m sediments. The main subject focuses on the climate change and human activity impacting the ecology and environments in recent 3000 yr. We design three years to finish many targets, includes sediment magnetism, mineral analyses, grain size variations, inorganic and organic proxies, biomarkers of diatoms and pollens. Finally, we want to compare the climate differences at late Holocene between the central Taiwan and northeastern Taiwan, where are respectively influenced by summer monsoon and winter monsoon."
