Description

Abstract
The upper and middle sections of the Danshuei estuary are anoxic environments because of untreated and treated domestic effluents and industrial wastes discharged into the estuary from its tributaries. The lower estuary gradually becomes oxic environment due to the intrusion of seawater. Thus, the Danshuei Estuary provides a natural environment to study the ecological variation of the marine copepod under such an anoxic/oxic estuarine environment. This project will collect the estuarine water and copepod samples from the Danshuei Estuary in Northern Taiwan to study the ecological change of the marine copepod and to study the accumulation ability of trace elements (Ag、Al、As、Ba、Bi、Cd、Co、Cr、Cs、 Cu、Fe、Mn、Ni、Rb、Pb、Sr、Zn、Se、Hg) by means of determining trace elements concentrations in dissolved phases of estuarine water and in dominant species of copepods. The determination of trace elements in the collected copepod samples will be analyzed by ICP-MS prior to digestion by HNO3-HCl acid in the water bath. The concentrations of trace elements in seawater samples are also analyzed by ICP-MS after pre-concentration. The analyzed results can help us to understand the bioaccumulation ability of trace elements by marine copepods and to evaluate the ecological system of copepods under the anoxic/oxic estuarine environment."
