Description

Abstract
Methane (CH4) is one of the most important greenhouse gases and it accounts for 32% of anthropogenic global radiative forcing. The global atmospheric concentration of CH4 has increased about 150% compare to the pre-industrial value. This increase in CH4 concentration is very likely caused by anthropogenic activities. However, the relative contributions of different sources have not been well determined. Despite shelf areas and estuaries only represent a small part of the world's ocean, they contribute about 75% to the global oceanic emission. In addition, coastal CH4 emissions may increase in response to global warming. Coastal regions are strongly affected by anthropogenic activities when terrestrial input increases and coastal areas under hypoxia expand, more CH4 may be emitted. However, research on CH4 concentrations and emissions in estuarine and adjacent coastal sea is scarce in Taiwan. Moreover, although anthropogenic activities have a huge impact on the coastal area, the social-environmental analysis is lacking. Here, I would like to propose a research project called “The anthropogenic impact on methane concentrations and fluxes in the coastal seas.” First, this research is to understand the variations of CH4 concentrations and environmental conditions in the coastal area. Secondly, this research also includes socio-economic information, which can help us to understand how the human activities influence the coastal area and CH4 fluxes. By including and analyzing the environmental data and socio-economic information, it can help us to propose relevant management measures for greenhouse gases reduction and climate change mitigation. This research project plans to start from Tamsui River estuary and adjacent coastal sea. It will further extend to other estuaries and coastal areas in the future.
