Description

Abstract
"The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) and the megamouth shark (Megachasma pelagios) are two of three filter-feeding shark species in the world. The whale shark is a circum-globe shark species, and was captured numerously in the before. This species was managed and protected by now during recent two decades in Taiwan. Some preliminary studies including biology and migration/movement were investigated, however, there are mysteries which exist in feeding habits and habitat environments in different life history stages and sexes. The megamouth shark is a rare and large shark species. There were only 95 individual recorded by now, and about 50% of them were caught in Taiwan waters. There were even 32 specimens caught during 2013-2014 off Taiwan, and the main reason is still unknown. Stable isotope analysis will be studied based on stomach contents, muscle tissues, and vertebrae collected before and in the future. In addition, hydrological data and fisheries information will be also investigated. This study will compare differences of feeding ecology and trophic level between these two large filter-feeding sharks, and further to discuss habitat partition, utilization, and adaption in various marine environments. Research results will provide for whale shark husbandry and ecotourism operators to realize whale sharks ecology, and make them be treated better, additionally, also be used as important reference for further management or conservation."
