歷史

「帝國之眼」一詞，原意係指後殖民論述中，帝國對於被殖民者的特殊心態與偏見。不過，本計畫借用此典故，乃帶有言外之意，寓指原先高高在上、睥睨一切的「帝國之眼」，在其慣常俯視的目光下，到底看到了什麼？一度曾經光輝榮耀的日不落帝國，當面對中日戰爭的強力挑戰，與國際形勢的重大變化，是否依然能夠維持其帝國尊嚴與驕傲？還是落入凡塵，被迫只能一再退讓與委屈妥協，低調唏噓地緬懷往日榮光？本計畫希望從英國自身的視角出發，探究英國對於中日戰爭爆發之初的觀察與評估。特別是從大英「帝國之眼」所見到的中日戰爭，相較於與過去從中國、日本或美國視角所理解的抗戰史，究竟有何差異？又呈現出何種獨特的樣貌？
