Description

Abstract
In recently years, global sea level rise is primarily affected by global warming and climate change, which will cause significant impacts on low-lying coastal areas and island nations. Since regional changes in sea levels vary in different regions, the rates of sea level change are not uniform globally. And local sea level variations that deviate from a global average rate remain poorly understood. In addition, sea level in the North Pacific Ocean exhibits significant interannual and decadal variability, which means that sea level trend determined using short-term data is contaminated by low-frequency climate variability. Therefore, accurate estimate absolute sea level variation in the North Pacific Ocean is of scientific and practical importance. Tide gauge records and satellite radar altimetry data are the contemporary instruments used to monitor sea level changes. However, tide gauge data records, although with long data records (> 60 years), include spatially varying vertical land motions whose rates calculated are still a challenge in geodesy. Even with multiple and successive satellite missions measuring global sea level change, satellite radar altimetry only spans ~20 years, resulting in errors of sea level determination significantly contaminated by the low-frequency sea level signals. In this study, we focus on calculating long-term sea level changes in the North Pacific Ocean using a novel modified sea level reconstruction method, which simultaneously estimates vertical motions at tide gauges, and long-term absolute sea level variations using the combination of long-term (> 60 years) tide gauge records and multi-mission altimeter measurements. In addition, we will determine long-term absolute sea level trends using sea level reconstruction data, and also analyze the relationship between low-frequency climate variability and long-term sea level change and the possible mechanism in the North Pacific Ocean.
