Description

Abstract
The ornamental fish export has increased steadily by 14% annually between 1998 and 2008. It has become an important elite agro industry. During the course of logistics, the stress causes Poecilia reticulate (Guppy) and Cichlosoma citrinellum Х C. synsilum (Candy blood parrot) susceptible to bacterial and viral infections. The mortality rate can be up to 20% resulted in serious business loss. The objectives of this project are to improve the survival of these 2 fishes. Our previous study formed sorghum distillery residue (SDR) a by-product form sorghum distiller at 250T/day. The SDR extract is able to increase the plasma total antioxidant capacity, retard the LDL oxidation, lower blood viscosity and improve growth in winter, in addition, reduce mortality in tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicas) and grey mullet (Mugil cephalus). Therefore, the bioactive compounds have been identified. The SDR is possible for reutilization to be a low-production-cost, anti-stress agent. I-Tiao-Gung (Glycine tomentella Hayata) has also been previously extracted and demonstrated its anti-inflmammatory activity. The active compounds have been identified. Fish fed either of the 2 extracts showed improving cold acclimation and stress tolerance during transportation. It is our hypothesis that these bioactive extracts may be applicable to the ornamented fishes to produce the same efficiency as shown in tilapia and grey mullet. In this study, we will try to determine the dosage, and the method to apply these agents by feeding, injection, dipping or immersion prior to or during shipping. The methodology established in this study may be applied to other ornamental fished logistics. If the mortality rate can be reduced to ≦4%, the compatibility and business image of our domestic ornamental fish industry will be greatly enhanced in the global market.
