【About CM 】 The Department of Communication Engineering in National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan, was established in 1966, and its graduate program was formed in 1979. Before 1990, the number of undergraduate students enrolled per year was only 50, and the graduate school only offered the Master-Degree program. After 1990, however, the worldwide progress in the field of telecommunication engineering has stimulated the demand for engineers with both software and hardware backgrounds. To meet this demand, the number of undergraduate students in the department has increased to 100 per year, and the Ph.D. program was establish in 1992. Presently, there are about 420 undergraduates, 225 M.S. degree students, and 90 Ph.D. degree students studying in our Institute. The Institute has 41 assistant, associate, and full professors. The institute has great reputation in the research field of communications engineering. It also has two IEEE Fellows. The research activities in the Institute cover major technical areas in communications engineering, including Communication Theory and System Design, Microwave IC, Antennas and Propagation Technologies, Broadband Networking and Switching Technologies, Communications and Multimedia Signal Processing and SOC / SIP. The funding mainly came from National Science Council (NSC), Ministry of Education, other government sectors, research institues and local industries. In 2009, the NCTU merges the two major departments (Communication Engineering and Electrical and Control Engineering) under the College of Electrical and Computer Engineering into one new department in order to provide well-rounded cross-area and inter-discipline system study to undergraduate students. The Department of Communications Engineering has the largest and strongest program in electrical communications in Taiwan. The Department of Electrical and Control Engineering focuses their researches on computer control and automation as well as biomedical engineering. The merge of the two departments will have in total 80 full-time faculty members, around 800 undergraduate students, around 500 master students and more than 320 Ph.D. students. With the renowned reputations of both departments in the past, the new department will become one of the largest academic and study environments in Taiwan specific for the electrical engineering.
