摘要: Habitat risk assessment is a valuable tool for identifying vulnerable areas and habitats that require enhanced protection. Climate change and human activities pose significant threats to environments, and their interaction may further amplify these impacts. This study explored how global warming, varying levels and types of human activities, and their combined effects would influence habitat risks in a marine ecosystem. More importantly, it investigated whether localized conservation measures could mitigate habitat risks under ongoing global warming. Using the South Penghu Marine National Park in Taiwan as a case study, habitat risk assessments were conducted under current condition and three future scenarios considering conservation management and projected warming. The results indicated that habitat risks increased slightly under the Global Warming scenario. However, strengthening the management of existing human activities, particularly fisheries, could substantially reduce overall habitat risks to 38% under current condition and to 50% under the Global Warming scenario. Although the spatial distribution of habitat risks varied among scenarios, coral reefs in general exhibited the highest risks, while both commercial and IUU fishing were identified as the primary drivers. Overall, our findings suggest that improved management of human activities can significantly mitigate habitat risks, exerting greater influences on risk reduction than the pressures imposed by global warming. In situations where global warming cannot be effectively halted in the short term, strengthening regulation of human activities may provide critical relief for ecosystems facing persistent environmental stress.</description>

摘要: Seahorses (Syngnathidae: Hippocampus) are among the most threatened marine fishes globally due to habitat degradation and overexploitation. This study provides the first comprehensive assessment of seahorse populations in Taiwan, integrating scientist-led underwater and landing surveys, fisher interviews, and citizen science, conducted between 2021 and 2022. We identified five species (H. kuda, H. histrix, H. kelloggi, H. spinosissimus, and H. trimaculatus), excluding pygmy seahorses, through morphological and molecular analysis in this study. Underwater visual census (UVC) revealed a pooled density of 0.0002 individuals/m(2), which is substantially lower than global densities for seahorse wild populations. Genetic analysis revealed contrasting evolutionary histories, while the pelagic-rafting H. trimaculatus exhibited high connectivity and diversity. H. spinosissimus showed extreme genetic isolation (FST approximate to 0.98) and H. kuda displayed evidence of recovery from historical depletion. In situ surveys indicated a high reliance on artificial marine debris and sea urchins as holdfasts. Finally, fisher interviews indicated an extremely-low post-capture survival rate (&lt;10%) for trawl bycatch, rendering release ineffective for this sector. We therefore propose a gear-specific conservation strategy: implementing spatial exclusion zones to restrict trawling in identified hotspots, while mandating quick-release" protocols specifically for the survivable crab-trap fishery."</description>

摘要: PurposeThis study aims to investigate the factors influencing restaurant chefs' purchasing decisions regarding eco-labelled seafood in Taiwan's hotel sector, an underexplored area compared to household consumer behaviour.Design/methodology/approachA structured questionnaire survey was conducted among 30 chefs working in northern Taiwan. Factor analysis and binary logistic regression were used to examine the relationships between chefs' cognition, access to information, hotel star ratings, and their purchasing behaviour.FindingsTwo key factors - Function of eco-labelling schemes" and "Information of eco-labelled products" - were significantly associated with chefs' purchasing decisions. Hotel star rating also showed a positive association with chefs in five-star hotels more likely to purchase eco-labelled seafood.Research limitations/implicationsAlthough the sample size is limited the purposive selection of chefs with procurement responsibilities ensures insights from decision-makers directly influencing seafood sourcing practices. Future research could expand geographic scope include other hospitality segments and assess the impact of sustainability training on purchasing behaviour.Practical implicationsThe findings suggest the need to integrate eco-labelling and sustainability education into culinary training and provide targeted information for chefs to enhance eco-labelled seafood adoption in the hospitality sector.Social implicationsChefs serve as opinion leaders within the foodservice industry. Promoting their awareness and capacity to source eco-labelled seafood may amplify sustainable consumption patterns and reinforce consumer education on responsible seafood choices.Originality/valueThis study offers new insights into industrial consumers' (chefs') roles in promoting sustainable seafood highlighting the importance of institutional factors and access to actionable information-areas often overlooked in existing eco-labelling research."</description>

摘要: Marine megafauna species are affected by a wide range of anthropogenic threats. To evaluate the risk of such threats, species' vulnerability to each threatmust first be determined. We build on the existing threats classification scheme and ranking system of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species by assessing the vulnerability of 256 marine megafauna species to 23 at-sea threats. The threats we considered included individual fishing gear types, climate-change-related subthreats not previously assessed, and threats associated with coastal impacts and maritime disturbances. Our ratings resulted in 70 species having high vulnerability (v &gt; 0.778 out of 1) to at least 1 threat, primarily drifting longlines, temperature extremes, or fixed gear. These 3 threats were also considered to have the most severe effects (i.e., steepest population declines). Overall, temperature extremes and plastics and other solid waste were rated as affecting the largest proportion of populations. Penguins, pinnipeds, and polar bears had the highest vulnerability to temperature extremes. Bony fishes had the highest vulnerability to drifting longlines and plastics and other solid waste; pelagic cetaceans to 4 maritime disturbance threats; elasmobranchs to 5 fishing threats; and flying birds to drifting longlines and 2 maritime disturbance threats. Sirenians and turtles had the highest vulnerability to at least one threat from all 4 categories. Despite not necessarily having severe effects for most taxonomic groups, temperature extremes were rated among the top threats for all taxa except bony fishes. The vulnerability scores we provide are an important first step in estimating the risk of threats to marine megafauna. Importantly, they help differentiate scope from severity, which is key to identifying threats that should be prioritized for mitigation.</description>
