Title: | Morphometric studies on choice of broodstock for genetic improvement in Penaeus penicillatus. In:R. Hirano and I. Hanyu (eds.) | Authors: | I-Chiu Liao Huang, C.M. Tsai, M.Y. |
Issue Date: | 1990 | Publisher: | The Second Asian Fisheries Forum | Abstract: | This study employed morphometric traits as potential selection criteria for the selection of future broodstock in Penaeus penicillatus.- Shrimps were collected from three coastal areas in south western Taiwan. Twenty-one morphometric traits including tail weight were measured in each shrimp. The results showed significantly higher mean values of tail weight and most other morphometric traits in both male and female shrimps in samples obtained from Tungkang than those from the other two locations.-. Females were significantly larger than males within each location. Stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that a large portion of variance was explained by partial total length (PTL) and posterior abdominal circumference (PAC) in male and by partial total length (PTL) and anterior abdominal circumference (AAC) in female. These variables gave a more accurate estimate of tail weight and may be used for choosing broodstock in aquaculture. |
