The Department of Mathematics of Tunghai University was established in 1970, and the Institute of Applied Mathematics was established in 1991 (after the department is combined, it is called the master's class of the Department of Mathematics). The undergraduate department of this department recruits single-class students and also supports the teaching of calculus in the whole school. Currently, there are 15 teachers, 1 assistant, and 5 teaching assistants. In order to improve the research of the department, teachers actively participate in various domestic and foreign academic exchanges, and apply for the implementation of relevant research projects of the National Science and Technology Commission, the Ministry of Education, etc. Our future faces considerable competition and challenges. The fourth wave of industrial revolution is sweeping across the world at an unprecedented speed. The use of artificial intelligence (AI), big data (Big Data) and various technological changes and smart applications are almost ubiquitous, completely subverting our traditional way of life, work and interconnection. In response to rapid changes in technology, many advanced countries have substantially increased the proportion of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects in schools. Mathematics is emphasized because these cutting-edge and novel technologies and engineering must rely on a very solid and rigorous mathematical foundation for further development and innovation. In other words, the fundamental importance of rigorous mathematical training to the development and innovation of science and technology is beyond doubt. The department attaches great importance to teaching as a fine tradition for many years. The main purpose of the undergraduate teaching is to cultivate students' logical thinking and mathematical analysis and application ability. The curriculum planning is mainly based on the implementation of basic mathematics education. The master's program takes mathematical theory and application as the development direction, and then cultivates talents in computing science and data analysis. Although this department is a department of basic disciplines, it also attaches great importance to applied research. Therefore, in the teaching and research of undergraduate special topics and master classes, it includes artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data, bioinformatics, finance, dynamic systems, and time-delay systems. , system control, applied algebra, combinatorial graph theory, number theory cryptography, and other cross-domain applications. In line with the long-term development of the department and the needs of the country and society, the department was renamed the Department of Applied Mathematics in 2012. It is expected that students will not only have basic abstract analysis training, but also apply what they have learned in different scientific fields, and further assist the business community solve the real problem. The educational goals of the department are : Provide solid basic mathematics training Cultivate the literacy of analyzing and dealing with mathematical problems Build a foundation for interdisciplinary learning Based on this, the core competencies that the department cultivates for students are proposed as follows logical thinking and expression skills Mathematical analysis and processing ability Mathematics Application and Information Ability
