海洋生態系中之食物鏈主要是由兩部分所構成，一為由植物性浮游生物-動物性浮游生物-魚之傳統攝食食物鏈，另一為微生物環，該循環之基礎生產者是自營性或異營性細菌，該循環過程將細菌生產之有機物或能量，經由原生動物傳遞至高階營養階層。原生動物扮演著連接此兩食物鏈之關鍵角色，地位十分重要。本計劃主要是研究長江口以南的東海陸棚區內，原生動物纖毛蟲之分布、現存量及生產量，希望藉由本研究之結果，可以了解本海域原生動物之分布、現存量與生產量狀態。同時更希望能提供本總計劃『黑潮與東海陸棚交換過程研究』，在建立東海碳循環模式時所需原生動物數據。
