Description

Abstract
The ocean has absorbed about one-fourth to one-third of anthropogenic CO2 emission since the onset of industrial revolution, which has resulted in a continuous reduction of seawater pH. This process is referred to as ocean acidification (OA). It is known that OA can also reduce the saturation states of carbonate minerals of seawater, which would reduce calcification rate and thus potentially have a negative impact on coral reef. The Dongsha Atoll, located in northwest part of the South China Sea, is far from the anthropogenic influence, so that it is an ideal site to study the impact of OA on coral reef system. As a sub-proposal of the integrated program of ECOBEST (Effects of Global Change on Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems in the Seas surrounding Taiwan in the Northwest Pacific), we have thoroughly studied the impacts of eutrophicatio on the carbon cycle of the East China Sea during the first phase (2012-2015). In the second phase of ECOBEST (2015-2018), besides the long-term observation in the ECS, we propose to investigate the temporal and spatial variations of seawater carbon chemistry parameters in the Dongsha Atoll. The main objectives of this project include: (1) to elucidate that the Dongsha Atoll acts as a source or sink of the atmospheric CO2 on both seasonal and annual scales? (2) to examine the relationship between coral reef coverage and the saturation states of carbonate minerals of seawater; (3) to predict the future changes in seawater pH and saturation states of calcium carbonate in response to the continuing rising of atmospheric CO2; (4) to explore the influence of sea grass on seawater pH and saturation states of carbonate minerals; and (5) to identify the potential OA refugia in the Dongsha Atoll.
