Issue Date: | 2001 | Publisher: | Aquaculture and Fisheries Resources Management, TFRI Conference Proceedings No.4 | Abstract: | The freshwater and marine fish of Taiwan have been taxonomically listed to 2331 species. In addition, there are 41 introduced species for aquaculture and other purposes, and up to 600 species imported as ornamental fish. These introduced fish can be classified into five categories based on the reasons for introduction into Taiwan, namely: (1) traditional customs, 9 species; (2) scientific objective, 2 species; (3) aquarium business, up to 600 species with at least 5 species now found in the waterways of Taiwan; (4) aquaculture industry needs, 12 species; and (5) aquaculture ventures, 18 species. A case study of red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) is given to show how an introduced fish is being investigated for its biological and ecological characteristics in its new environment in Taiwan. Taiwan intends to further develop its freshwater and marine aquaculture industry and establish a "Larviculture Center for the Asia-Pacific Region". It is now able to supply fry of more than 70 aquaculture fish species and 120 omamental fish species. With this intention, Taiwan needs to import more exotic fish species. |
