(eds.) AbstractThe first work on induced breeding of grey mullet in Taiwan was done by a team of dedicated workers and researchers during the early 1960s. Studies focused on general biology and habits, methods of collection and selection of mature spawners, transportation of spawners from the fishing grounds to the experimental station, techniques on maintenance of spawners in ponds, induced spawning and egg hatching, and preliminary experiments on larval rearing. From 1969 onwards, all works were undertaken at the newly established Tungkang Marine Laboratory including refinement and improvement of techniques that were developed, overcoming difficulties during the critical periods of rearing larvae, and improving the survival rate of the larvae. The first success in closing the reproductive cycle of grey mullet in captivity was achieved in 1977, and consequently the adoption of the mass propagation technology by the private sector. An important factor to consider in the mass propagation of grey mullet is a good source of spawners whether from the wild or from the aquaculture itself. Established protocols on induced spawning, stripping and artificial fertilization, egg incubation and hatching, and larval rearing are summarized in detail in this chapter. |
