Current faculty members: 11 Student Enrollment: Please refer to pages of Department of Medicine and Graduate Institute of Biomedical Sciences Physiology is the underlying discipline of basic medicine, while pharmacology is the basic of clinical sciences. Whether in the old days or today’s biomedical fields, teaching and research in physiology and pharmacology play the role to bridge the basic and clinical medicine. Through combination of both fields, the department is aimed to integrate biomedical teaching and research to pursue cross-disciplinary consistency, from clinical medicine, human physiology, animal models, organs, cellular functions, to biochemical mechanism. In addition, by way of cooperation and collaboration of separate research groups in Physiology, Pharmacology, Molecular Biology, and Bioinformatics, the department hopes to explore various topics in a holistic manner and to establish comprehensive physiology-meaningful theoretical frameworks. For curricular arrangement, in addition to basic subjects, the other courses, such as neuroscience, special topics on circulation systems, special topics on pulmonary systems, all involve discussions of integrated fields. Research groups emphasize on studies in cardiovascular functions and diseases, neuroscience, cellular biology and tissue engineering, are actively to apply for program projects. Through the implementation of program projects, the principal and affiliated investigators collaborate to explore novel topics. Meanwhile, in line with the need of life sciences in the post-genomic era, the department weighs on the University-wide perspectives to pursue both prospective and practical biotechnological research with faculty from basic and clinical medical sciences. The faculty members maintain solid partnerships with the departments of Ophthalmology, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Rheumatology, Neurology, and Anesthesiology of the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. The collaborations will also expand to outside of the Chang Gung Enterprise in the future. The aims and goals of the department coincide with overall development of the University in terms of integration of theory and practice, combination of basic and clinical medicines, and balanced developments in both research and teaching.
