The Graduate Institute of Electronics Engineering (GIEE) was established on August 1st, 2001. The mission of GIEE is to foster cutting-edge research and to cultivate top R&D talent for the semiconductor industry. At its inception, GIEE encompassed two major research tracks, Integrated Circuits and Systems (ICS) and Solid-State Electronics. In the ICS track, the faculty was committed to research in pioneering communication and multimedia systems as well as innovative circuit-design techniques. In the Solid-State Electronics track, effort was primarily focused on the research and development of various semiconductor and optoelectronic devices, advanced semiconductor process technology, etc. In order to better reflect the technology trends of the semiconductor evolution, in January 2004 the Solid-State Electronics track was renamed the Nano Electronics (NE) track. Furthermore, as the scale of VLSI System-on-Chip (SoC) and its design complexity grew, computer-aided design became increasingly important. In August 2004, the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) track was spun off from the ICS track. The establishment of the EDA track marked the first dedicated EDA program in Taiwan. All GIEE tracks work closely with the semiconductor industry, and with such tight relationships, GIEE is well-positioned to leverage creativities and resources from both academia and industry to pursue academic excellence.
