National Health Research Institute established research groups for Environmental Health and Occupational Medicine. The research fields include epidemiology, analytical chemistry, cellular and molecular biology, environmental and occupational toxicology, pathology, risk assessment, occupational medicine, and some research of fundamental science. In addition, we aim to carry out task-oriented and integrated research on the health risks of local and emerging environmental toxicants, build up a knowledge platform of health risks of environmental hazards, and provide more suggestions for responding to environmental risk factors for Taiwan. Therefore, National Environmental Toxicology Research Center was established on May 1, 2012, with the support of the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the resolution of the board of directors. Over the past ten years, environmental health and food safety have been gradually issued around the world. In order to provide more evidence-based policy suggestions for administrative agencies, integrating the capabilities of Environmental and Occupational Health group and the Environmental Toxicology group is necessary. With evidence-based results via both fundamental and clinical science research, we can transcript to policy suggestions and popularization of science. Therefore, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences was formally established by combining these two units on April 15, 2015. It is set as a task-oriented national research institute of environmental health, leading Taiwan to develop precision environmental medicine and become the top environmental health research center in Asia.
