Description

Abstract
Shrimps and lobsters have high biodiversity and economical importance. There are still very high potential in their taxonomic researches. This project will continue to extensively investigate the marine shrimp and lobster fauna of Taiwan. Moreover, the present work will actively participate marine biodiversity surveys organized by Singapore institutions in Indonesia and India. Together with other existing material already obtained from Southeast Asia, integrative taxonomic works (i.e. combining morphological and molecular genetic data) on the shrimps and lobsters of Taiwan, Southeast Asia and India will be undertaken with focus on the exact species identities amongst these high biodiversity areas. Phylogenetic studies on groups with predominate diversity in Southeast Asia such as Parapenaeopsis s.l. (with commercial importance), Crangonidae (one of the largest families in shrimps) and Polychelidae (exclusively deep sea) will also be conducted to elucidate their higher classification. Other than effectively documenting the high marine biodiversity of Taiwan, this project can successfully enlarge the research scope of the applicant to Southeast Asia and India. The achievements obtained through this work can ensure Taiwan scientists at a leading position in shrimp and lobster taxonomic researches in Asia or even in the Indo-West Pacific.
